The increasing strength of chess engines, the millions of computer games and the volumes of opening theory available to every player are making top-level chess less imaginative. Decisive games in super-tournaments have declined, while the number of games with what I'd call "creative" content is also on the slide.
The 2018 world championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, for example, ended with zero decisive classical games. (Carlsen defended his world title by winning a rapid-game playoff.)
This is not the players’ fault, but the reality they face. It would be strange to expect them to deliberately decrease their chances of a positive outcome by taking unreasonable risks for the sake of playing more “entertaining” games. From my own experience, I know how difficult it has become to force a complex and interesting fight if your opponent wants to play it safe. As soon as one side chooses a relatively sterile line of play, the opponent is forced to follow suit, leading to an unoriginal game and an inevitably drawish outcome.

Paul morphy with the white pieces vurses Alpha zero with the black pieces who would win in your opinion

2. Chessing Mate

Alpha : So what opening are you preparing for next game ? Alpha : HUMAN Gambit accepted .

3. Stefan Finke

This is just humiliating.

4. Jerry Brice

What if you set the game up in FEN notation but indicate in the flags that castling has already occurred. This is how you use an engine to analyze such a game.

5. Salman Khan

Man just tell us what happened in the damn alpha vs alpha game instead of unnecessarily inserting your input and divert it from the main game. Just tell what happened. What could have happened isn't your cup of tea for this game that is alphazero. Don't challenge it's intelligence by providing variations coz it has already calculated it and they are not good enough. I respect you but don't turn into an overconfident smart-ass. Thank you

6. Why

what about chess but you have to take all the pieces to win

7. Witek Kowalski

Greetings from Poland. Be strong in strange times.

8. cinegraphics

"We are Alpha Zero. Resistance is futile."

9. Enrico Caruso

I still prefer to watch a Capablanca game.

10. ThePandaFuzzy

#suggestion do a chess engine vs a different version of a chess engine

11. Ginjou Army

Since they are computer they can not both be Alpha 0 one of them has to be Alpha 1. Wait are they settling who is the real Alpha 0 here through Chess? Mind blown!

12. Ishaan Salhotra

You know we've solved chess when the AI offers a draw on the first move

13. Agosto Ceilings

Idiots ruined the game by Not Castling TOUCH AND MOVE SHOULD APPLY TOO.

14. Tong Lu

That's 20 minutes straight of moves I don't understand...

15. robizzlor

Expected draw. Got draw. Boring game.

16. Peter Wang

i just used the riemann hypothesis to prove that not just chess but any symmetric board game always ends in a draw without even finding the winning strategy!!!!!!!!!! take that alphazero, I call a draw BEFORE you even make your first move!!!!!!!1

17. don dfactor

I suppose all types of games and sports, If played perfectly by either side, will result in a draw.

1. CookieNinja

Nope, consider 'knots and crosses' but on a 2 by 2 board. It is impossible for the first player to lose even if he tried. A 3 by 3 board is proven to be a draw if both players play optimal. This was proven long ago by brute force. Wether white has a winning strategy in chess may well be unprovable in practise since there are more potential chess games than there are particles in the universe. Untill the day we can trim the possibilities down to a computable level we won't know for sure if chess played perfectly has a winning strategy (most likely for white), or if it is destined for a draw.

19. Geo Detective

If you want to analyse the game earlier, just move both kings one step and back to the original position...

20. Abdurrahman Mehmeti

How can I download alpha 0

21. Y Agent Blueberry

if we could predefine moves, why can you just make the king move to e2/e7 and then back so you could actually run this through an engine?

22. TheLordofMurder

Wow...that was like watching 2 Gods attempting to destroy one another.

23. Dimitris Kontoleon

Come on is too many ways to analyzed with stock fish (move both king back and forth on early game or sayed in this possision no castle...

24. Maxime Dupré

It's strange, I analyzed the game with chess.com and black had a lot of opportunities and advantages

1. TheLordofMurder

Stockfish is inferior to Alpha; Stockfish disagrees with significant number of Alpha's moves... And gets stomped by Alpha anyway...

25. michał botor

maybe. i will. push. THIS. pawn.

26. Double D

Does anybody know alpha's elo? :O

27. Rudolf Hitler

Alpha is the best hoax. We cannot download it like stockfish chess engine, or buy it like komodo chess engine!

28. Eklavya Goyal

Jean defrausse was actually playing this version of chess.

29. Chuck Norris

Why did no one get the " Check it out" pun yet? He says it so many times. Im dying..

30. Isaac Amaral

I watched the first three moves and thought "aw, that's just the opening, gonna skip some time" And at 7:20 the game was like... That

31. Fer uwu

You know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you since I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't t!?

try playing versus yourself.

34. Sean Hettenbach

Um... I haven't really used chess software since 2012-13 when I played avidly... But I clearly remember a position set up feature with a king/queen side castle available option...

35. Cyril Gantalao

I predicted the game just before the video played "It's a DRAW"

36. Thomas Edgerley

My head hurts

37. Aris Filos

I play chess as a hobby for seventeen years now. I have a respectable degree of knowledge on this game. But every time you say "obviously" and explain the position, a part of me dies... :P

38. Guillaume le cam

Alphazero vs me 1 0 me breaking my computer who win know ?

39. Guga

chess just like i played with my relatives when i was a 10 year old.

40. IC1101

Unfortunately I don't know which move Alpha played and which ones Agadmator proposed.

41. Anthony Yarborough

Even though it was extremely complicated. You explained every variance very simply. Great freaking content. Keep going!

42. Eliaz Ruis

Has AlphaZero’s 100 games been released yet?

43. Randle Forester

I hate your videos

44. Craigevansagain

An immortal draw for chess engines.

45. TruthandjusticeXXL

What would happen if they play 12 games in a row? Would there ever be a winner?

46. Ignited YT

Alpha obviously won

47. Dodo el modo

Now we need Magnus Carlsen Vs Magnus Carlsen

48. joe chu

Mmf, trading pieces for position while keeping constant pressure up to the draw

49. STOPYOURCLICKBAIT Bruh

He played like a wholeass half a game before I realized he was demonstrating what alpha could have done 🤦‍♂️

50. monu singh

Wrongly studied at 11:02 knight cannot be scarifies thier

51. mc100hu

once again, as i got no answer: Whats the point of predefining the opening?

52. HighLigerBimBam

Just setup a position with no castling allowed with chessbase and you can completely analyse the game with stockfish.

53. SomeRandomDude

@agadmator, if you want to analyze with an engine (but can't due to the "no castling rule"), you just inject two extra king moves per player into the early part of the move sequence. I mean as soon as each king can move, then just add 2 moves per player, one to move the king and then a second to move it back. Then you have the exact same position without the possibility of castling, so you can use your engine.

54. Maximilian Rediger

This is the 6d chess of 6d chess

55. seto749

I'd love to see the computers playing the Capablanca variant with the Chancellor and the Archbishop.

56. evoii323

“Alpha white alpha black, or alpha 1 or alpha 2.. I haven’t decided” lol

57. Chessector

it's like god vs himself

58. Chessector

alpha zero caught the cornivirus

59. KoalaLumpUhr

5:48 - dog senses abnormality in the universe and leaves.

60. Funny Memes

1. Funny Memes

So is it just showing different scenarios?

2. Funny Memes

7:12 How did they go backwards?

61. Tim Houser

You can evaluate this game with other chess engines from move 3 by having each side move the king and then on the next move the king moves back to his starting location.

62. Foxkill2342

Tear down the castling wall. Make chess renaissance again!

63. Ali Akbar Azizi

Stockfish has paramters that allow to disable casteling

64. robcritter

When I was younger, I used to play a variation of chess in which you could no longer castle after you were checked. It made for some very unlikely openings and retreats.

65. IndustryOfMagic

4:05 "who are we to argue with alpha?" That's exactly what alpha wants you to say xD

66. Arthur James Urtharia

Alpha zero is the devil that tells you to disregard the chess principles

67. KRS

If we divide any variables of this match into each match, can we have a chess champion 10 rounds? With end up 10 draw????????

68. nikolay8000

What an unbelievable game

69. Blast King

How about alpha vs beta

70. Joshua Hemming

When the computer plays the computer black will win by 51% chance for every 100 games because the ultimate offence is the ultimate defence.

71. Moon Boy

Frustrating game to watch. Alpha Zero just has an answer to everything.

72. juldor93

let it run 100 games and then see if all of them are draws

73. monkerud2108

Played a game with the black King and queen swaped, the openings are completely diffrent as well. I’m not especially great or exsperienced, but it seems to me that the knights behave very diffrently in the opening.

74. Oqalios

Tyrone vs Chad

75. Bj D

My head was exploding.

76. Wesley Campbell

A game where afterwards each player is asked which move they would play differently, and both players respond "none of them."

77. Afrath Ruzaik

Can someone clarify what alphazero is

1. Heavenly Fusion Guitars

AlphaZero is a computer program developed by artificial intelligence research company DeepMind to master the games of chess, shogi and go. Currently the best chess software in the world.

78. Thomas Clark

My head hurts

79. The Boy

Who drew? AplhaZero or AlphaZero?

80. Daniel Martini

what if they didn't decide on a draw; how often can you repeat the same move (the last two)?

1. Dan Kelly

If a position repeats 3 times it's a draw, (no matter how many moves apart).
