A personal thank you to Air Force MSgt Ryan Crane for nominating me for this flight. Thank you sir.
The Thunderbirds have a NOsel Channel
This flight took place on May 3, 2018 in Biloxi Mississippi. The reason it took so long to release is the high amount of research I wanted to do before releasing the video. I even visited the Air Force Research Lab at Wright Patterson AFB to discuss some aspects of this video with Aerodynamicists. Synchronizing all this footage and coordinating additional B Roll with the Thunderbirds Public Affairs Officer also required a lot of effort.
These are my own thoughts, not those of the U.S. Air Force or the Thunderbirds:
I've been around a lot of pilots and ground crew in my life and I must say that the professionalism displayed by the Thunderbirds was astounding. Their goal is to inspire and demonstrate the capabilities of the US Air Force, so I'll take it a step further. If you're a smart young person who is interesting in changing your life for the better, strongly consider the Air Force. The job market isn't the best at the moment but the Air Force still has opportunities available for you to learn incredible skills even if you're not interested in flying. They manage everything from logistics, electronics, aerospace, cyber and even space systems. The threats to freedom are becoming more complex, and in my experience working for the Department of Defense over a 15 year span (even longer if you count my work as a contractor) The US Air Force consists of some of the most intelligent service members our country has. These people are book-smart, but also have the confidence to solve real world problems with their own hands. If I have a complex aerodynamic question, my first call is usually to someone in the Air Force, because they understand these complex phenomena intuitively. For example, in this video you would hear Flack and I talking about pitot tubes in flight. We also had other discussions about fuel burn rates, Prandtl Glauert, weather.... all kinds of things. Simply put, if you're looking for direction in your life, and you're good with science and math... consider the Air Force. That being said, they also need other types of skills as well. Logisticians, writers, creative people who know how to solve complex problems in unique ways.

This video was the opportunity of a lifetime. When asked if I wanted to fly in an F-16, I said "Yes please, and there are some things I'd like to study. Can we try supersonic flight at different altitudes?" I'm very grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Flack and the rest of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This flight took place on May 3rd, 2019. This Spatial Disorientation training is something all fighter pilots go through so they can understand how their own physiology works under these conditions. Thank you for watching and learning with me. I always wanted to know what happened in the cockpit when a jet goes supersonic. The F20 was rated for 9 Gs but could take much much more. So much that it killed 2 pilots during test phases, pulling 10 plus Gs. It's a T38 with one massive afterburner engine comparable to the FA18. Did not go into service with any country, but it was awesome!

      3. Brett G

No one can imagine what 6+ Gs or heck just what inverted flight is like, you cannot understand how foreign it is to any experience you have ever encountered. It is not majestic in the cockpit, proper aerobatics is brutal. Brutal physically, mentally, and brutal to your situational awareness. I am glad you got to experience it first hand. It has been a few years since I have flown aerobatics in an aerobatic aircraft. While the jets can pull high speed and high-G, the piston birds can due very high-G and absurd things the jet can only dream about, like gyroscopic tumbling. I would love to have the opportunity with the Thunderbirds or Angles all said, you are in a unique position. What a thrill. FYI the speed of sound is influenced not by altitude, but be outside air temperature. Obviously in the troposphere we have a lapse rate generally speaking the higher you go in the Troposphere.

I was in the 159thCAM and got my chance to do a DACT (Dissimilar Aircraft Combat Training) I.E> go up in the back seat of an F15 against a simulated enemy aircraft over the Gulf of Mexico. We were doing some incredible maneuvers (dog fight) as the scheduled F4 had issues and they sent up an F15A model instead. We pulled -3.2g, +10.3g, and Mach 1.3 during the manuvers. I even got to turn the aircraft around and head to the start zone after each maneuver... best 3-hours ever. I would do it again if I had the chance. I only wish i had a GoPro back then. (1993 or so.)

before i even knew who i was in life, as a kid i was convinced i was gonna be a jet fighter pilot, but just to fly a jet would be pretty awesome, i actually did ace combat 7 skies unknown on hard mode in Virtual Reality, and completed the first 2 missions :P O_O

    5. Peter Gunn

Destin, I have come to understand the complexities and similar personality traits of high achieving or very devoted people. Over the years I have been privileged to meet scores of Special Forces Operators representing all branches of our military and a few from other countries. These men all tend to have a very high degree of modesty and they are surprisingly grounded in humility. This is not at all the what most people would expect. These people, like the men and woman you experienced have a tremendous degree of responsibility, knowledge and expertise in their chosen field, and yet they’re blessed with the gift of modesty. They don’t come across as loud boasters or egomaniacal divas. And I believe that the core of this trait lies in their observation of those who came before them. Of course there will always be a bad nut in the batch but those people tend to get weeded out by attrition. Another reason may be their understanding of the position they hold. They appreciate their unique position in that their are only small numbers employed in their field. This brings about a bond among them which is where humility is an established trait among their peers.

Deeply cool... Would love to take your place any day...! Tough as nails staying alert as far as you did mate... !! F-16's as far as being mid 1970's tech... they are are specially wicked little air frame... loved by many around the planet. Just an easy little thing all round.....Tiny in the flesh, well against an F-4 Phantom II lol it's cute lol.. The performance is still absolutely world class... shame you didn't go into C of G and C of P and the correlation, in the design of the f-16, and how it making the F-16 so agile compared to others in it's era. As an Aircraft Engineer of 27 years .. All the fighters of that era, are brutal... the Technology at the time, the money spent.. it was insanity!! The best part.... all the data, these 4th gen aircraft collect...... Insane aerodynamics, and the immense (!!) power they make...The conservation of momentum...turned into the 5th generation of fighters.. you think the F-16 is crazy, add thrust vectoring.. more power, better aerodynamics... and then... state of the Art Avionics!! yikes.. No wonder why it's cheaper to send a Reaper Drone to take out a target... or a cruise missile.....no offense. The target won't care... hahaha What we see at Airshows barely scratches the surface. Even front line stuff... What the current line up of fighters... on both sides... is capable of... would blow everyone away! Love the content... and dearly love the channel Destin... keep up the amazing work mate!! Huge cheers from Aus!

you are liars who present some technical data of totally false efficiency. In real life, the efficiency is 30 percent lower than what you present, you are liars and all you present is marketing, nothing else .... lies lies lies!

Destin, I think you have the flight date a year off. Keesler AFB has the date as May 3, 2019, not 2018.

    45. Anna

Thunderbird 8?!? I got to help unload that aircraft when it arrived at Keesler for the airshow in 2009. :)

    46. john mcgovern

Your eyes going sideway after rotation stopped in chair! It always facinated me when I rode on the back of the landrover going down the road looking backwards then when stopped the scenery still seamed to be going away.

    47. Randy Francis

What's more credible is that not only is "Mace" humble and articulate with her skill set, she is also lethal to our adversaries.

    48. Patrick Ng

Super entertaining and informative episode... 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    49. john mcgovern

It is impossible to accurately measure the static pressure of moving air because of surounding mechanicle influences on the traveling air. Turbulence, venturi effect, ram effect.

    50. Gufful

Airforce? Bruh I don’t even have legs.

    51. john mcgovern

Pulling up into an arc creates radial deceleration? yes/no. Perhaps not a good description. Maybe centrifagle force .

    52. FullSendFeyo

Why do I hate this guy for tapping out during such an amazing opportunity. I think half of us would keep going until we passed out.

I remember Destin doing a video about Granular Convection (Brazil nut effect), and cannot seem to find it anymore. Would anyone have a link? Thanks!
