Try 1/16” tungsten and start with 35 amps.

You should have ordered more grips of all kinds. You are about to learn how much the right grip matters.

Was hoping you'd make something other than the bog-standard frame type.

Should change the title to welding a frame and assembling a bike?

Alec learn to feed your filler, that was the biggest game changer for me. It allowed my full concentration on the torch. Night day friend. Keep up the vids.

64.5 degree head angle? Damn that's slack for a hard tail bike and if those are the trails you'll likely ride the most then there's really no need for it. They were super flat trails. I

Hi Alec, a strong recommendation I have when you reach the point where you are finished with welding on the frame, send the frame somewhere to have it normalized. Chromoly likes to crack right next to the welds If it isn’t normalized

Alec! I have some encouragement for you for GTAW/Tig welding! 1. More arc length, and the welding at the end of the video looked like it. The earlier welding shows dips in the arc's brighteness, which usually occurs when the tungsten is getting super close, or touching the weld puddle, or the filler metal is almost touching the tungsten. Practice with a friend reading out the voltage for you from the welding machine. Try to keep between 11-16 volts for this thin wall tubing, even pushing 18 volts would be fine if the weld passes bends. 2. The filler metal size, although small, may be too large to easily fabricate with the thin wall tubing. Ideally, the wire size would be comparable, if not smaller in size. If you have GMAW/Mig welding machine that uses ER70S-2 or ER70S-6 .035" Dia wire, just try welding with that wire with your Tig process. 3. I noticed you tried using pulse half way through the video--that's a good idea here, but probably not needed. Use that to prevent blowing thru the part, but don't use it to melt larger dia filler metals. 4. Swapping to a larger gas cup was a good idea. 5. As the part heats up, lowering amps can help. Foot petals are great, but using finger tip controls are often easier to use for tubing. Generic part# example: PXLFTC-6 . It can be zip tied to the torch's body to run by hand rather than foot. I have to use it in a roll cage build, since alot of the out of position welding that I've been working on has no foot access to start with. Cheers!

Steel frames have some spring to them so they have a tenancy to absorb some trail vibration. Aluminum is very rigid, and passes the vibrations to the rider.

64.5 degree head angle? Damn that's slack for a hard tail bike and if those are the trails you'll likely ride the most then there's really no need for it. They were super flat trails. I reckon 67 degree or so would be about right and probably feel better for you coming from the CX bike

If this project goes well, You should make a titanium frame bike, expensive, but very strong and much lighter than steel.

      1. dolimi jotoo

This is going to be a great series as I’m a road biker and mountain biker. I’m sure you have a lot of contact support on building your bike maybe even friends at Global Cycling

      Why not from Damascus :(

      1. Edgar der Schmied

And te Grips would be much much cooler in leather or wood. Or twisted silver wire coated. Like the sword handles. And, lol, maybe forge a straight razor first or sharpen the one you once made^^

    37. Uncle Nick

You want to look at tig brazing the frame ??.

    38. Dariune

no one has been making mountain bikes from steel for the last 20 years, everyone is using aluminum 6000-9000 series alloys, and they are rarely just standard size tube stock, more likely hydroformed. Still it is interesting to watch someone who isnt as much into mountainbikes attempt a very novel task of designing one from scratch instead of just buying one

    39. josh schlotmann

Use your cup to rock back and forth as you weld

    40. Michael Prenzler

Where did you order the steel parts for the frame from?

    42. navitas1

Hi Alec. Don't forget, when you weld those tubes, to make a little drill on those one that are closed, because the gases inside the tube may ruin the welding by blowing the molten metal when you are making the welding.

    52. Ryan Mullin

You want your handlebars bars to be wide! they offer a greater degree of control than shorter bars and improve you balance because they widen your stance. If your arms are tiring it's likely due to you over gripping!

Bars are meant to be wide

    57. DIO Brando

If this turns out to be too much of a challenge you can always make a bmx frame as it’s much simpler and easier to design and weld

      1. diungy alisnr

You would be suprised on the lightness and quality of a carbon fiber frame. Doing this way is your ability to TIG such a strong weld, it can literally make or break the project. If t

    60. llessurlihp

Alex as good as you are I don’t think buying a frame would have cost much more, as that’s about the only thing you didn’t buy. and I know it’s because you can make it but a lot of work for why. Keep up the good work though.

If you get a chance, pop over to my channel where last year I built a tripletfatbike where the center rider faces the rear, but still pedals forward relative to their seated position.

    71. MikeOrkid

I know that you're already on ep 2 of this build but I want to suggest a gas lens (fupa cup) and back purging whatever you can to keep those welds solid.

    72. X xPitchKingx X

You would be suprised on the lightness and quality of a carbon fiber frame. Doing this way is your ability to TIG such a strong weld, it can literally make or break the project. If the build uses tires such as his "trail" bike, then carbon fiber would for sure be the way to go. And i know this is a METAL/FORGING channel. Just some thoughts from an ex DH biker. Who knows maybe they are making them from aero-gel by now?

    73. Anurag Gutte

now mountain bikers like me will enjoy this channel even more.

    74. Michael Bird

I'm so glad you got chromoly! i remember the live when you mentioned the bike and that was my first thought! Good Start! and very good of you making that drift relaly quick! been following for probably a year now and love it. i'm getting set up to do some metal work too, more on the pouring side! Cheers :)
