This MR2 is full of (nasty) surprises

Mighty Car Mods

Mighty Car Mods

Last episode Marty was working on the MR2 which turns out to be not quite as clean as he first thought. Almost every bolt was seized or rusted, and while the body itself is in reasonable condition just about everything attached to it doesn't work. This episode the fuel tank tank needs to be removed and new coolant hoses installed throughout the car. The MR2 slowly but surely being restored to it's former glory but there's still a lot of work left to do.

I just ordered one. I'm very excited to see what's in Cheryl's box ! 😝

      4. BigggRoss

I bet at the factory they mount the fuel tank before putting the body on the frame lol

      5. Eoghan Fla

Mighty Car Mods Marty, I know that was a real struggle to get that tank in but it did make me feel better as I’m constantly working on car projects on my own and now I’ve realized what I must look like. I seem to curse more than you though!

    2. RX-Heaven

I’m surprised at how much he doesn’t swear.

    3. Nathan

Not sure if this would've helped with your tank, but for motorcycles a common thing to do is get a bunch of clean nuts and some denatured alcohol, throw those in the tank and just shake the hell out of it for an hour or so, helps remove loose rust and cleans up the inside quite a bit!!

    4. Aaron

What song of Moog's is that while Marty is pulling the tank?

    5. nrs

Have owned a '91 MR2 since new. Still a marvel, great fun to drive. Unequaled by what currently available today.

    6. WasabiCars

Condolences. Working on this car looks like a right pain.

The quiet little ‘ah ya bastard’ @3:46 is exactly how i feel most of the time working on old rusty shitboxes

    9. SVFilming

Should have just dropped the engine..smh

    10. Ptao Tom

Best MCM episode ever. Is it weird that I enjoyed Marty struggling through the whole thing? It felt like literally every time I work on any car ever.

      1. soinu foig

Does a k series fit in there

    11. Matt & Amy

Bringing back so many memories..err...nightmares? I probably won't sleep well this week. Thanks for dragging all this junk back up into my memory. lol. In all seriousness, I'm loving this.

This is exactly like real life! Thank you Marty! Hahaha

    20. bubdubs

Have you delt with the "hose from hell" yet? It usually requires you pull the motor to remove a 3" hose. NEVERMIND! 4 mins in and you mention it. I wish I had an mr2....

    21. aeperformance48

Coming from Montreal Canada, I suggest wearing glasses when working under the car. Learnt my lesson the hard way when a piece of rust flew into my eye.. let's just say it was not a good time mate

    28. Quinton Starman

Hahaha you complaining about rust makes me laugh as I've worked on cars way worse for rust. Hell most cars in Canada are worse

      1. soinhu foitu

I would have thought the rear suspension/ engine cradle all dropped out as a single unit. I think pulling it out probably would have been worth it.

    29. Jay Duffy

Would you guys put together a youtube playlist if your music you use. Love the backing tracks to your videos

    30. [OUTLWD]

Alternator is no fun either, only 2 ways to get it out, and each one SUX!

    31. Nacho Martinez

I really enjoyed this one. I used to think I totally suck at working on the car, but it turns out that also MCM have bad days

fixing it. You don’t want it to be for nothing. 2- expect to have to pull the engine. Even if the engine is running good, timing belts will require the engine to be pulled.

If any of you do decide to buy one of these, two things: 1- check the body for rust. Make sure anything not repairable is good because you’re going to be putting a lot of money i

Watching this MRPOO series just makes me hurt; many memories of working on cars that just don't want to be changed. Also - does it hurt more knowing that you have a mate there with you, but their main roll is to be on the camera. #weallhavethatuselessmate

    46. Patrick Stuart

little tip - when fitting silicon hoses, spray a small amount of wd40 in it at the ends and it will slide on the pipes so much easier.

    47. UncleManuel

MR2 quick remove tank - only Marty can do this... ^_^

    48. Vito Vitale

I have owned 5 MR 2's 2 turbos and 3 aspirated (one a parts car. They cost a fortune to fix because of the rear engine configuration but are fun to drive but no match for the more modern BMW 3 series and Golf Gti's. Only upside is that they are so easy to sell because they have such a passionate fan base and I have had people drive a 1000 miles to pick my car up no problem!

    54. Steve O'Donald

Thanks fro watching..... remember, if I can do it, you can do it. References elsewhere. Cheers EO

    55. Matteo Emiliani

Thanks for the 8:00 shout out. It's very hard and we weep. Alot. Everything rounds off, snaps off or just isn't there anymore.

    58. Toto Abicyclette

It's no longer an MR2, due to all the parts that you had to replace. Let's call it the MR2.6. Or the MR3, or 4.

I'm near Cincinnati and I have had heat shields and backing plates rust completely away on my 2000 Sierra 3500. And exhaust bolt/nut combos at flanges, so I've heard it rust And on a windy day I hear the clear coat peeling.....
